With Thanksgiving behind us and the winter holidays not far behind, this is an ideal time to celebrate the season by embracing gratitude. Here, we offer five ways to show gratitude for all the good surrounding you. As John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
Some folks refer to random acts of kindness as “paying it forward.” All this means is that you seek opportunities to enhance someone else’s day -- for no reason other than to make them smile and treat yourself to the warm and fuzzies we all experience when we broadcast the best version of ourselves.
For example, open the door for the parent wrestling a stroller through the entrance of an establishment. Hold the elevator for someone struggling to make it in the nic of time. These small moments can make a big difference and maybe even inspire that individual to do the same for the next person they meet. Keep the cycle of thanks spinning!
While good upbringing and basic manners insist that you utter a sincere “thank you” for that person who held the door or elevator, we invite you to take it one step further. An old fashioned thank you note goes a long way to express thanks that will last in the recipient’s mind, and maybe even provide a little Hallmark piece of artwork for their desk or fridge.
We all know that a kind word or compliment can brighten anyone’s day. The next time you’re in the checkout line at the grocery store, take a break from scrolling on your phone or eyeing the tabloids to interact with those around you.
Or when is the last time you genuinely complimented your significant other, kids, or closest friends? Highlight the good around you by calling attention to the details that make your inner circle so special.
By expressing your gratitude, you live by it, as JFK encouraged. That kind of enthusiasm for daily life is contagious and sure to spread among those you know and love.
According to University of California professor Sonja Lyubomirsky, “Gratitude is an antidote to negative emotions, a neutralizer of envy, hostility, worry, and irritation. It is savoring; it is not taking things for granted; it is present-oriented.”
Model gratitude every day to make a difference in the world around you, this season and all through the year.
It’s a tough season to say no… to the baked goods, savory treats, and heaps of leftovers. But, encouraging healthy habits and behaviors in your loved ones is a great way to demonstrate that you’re thankful to have them in your life.
